The Fresh Air Academy at Indian Creek Nature Center has three main goals:

1. Provide extended, immersive outdoor learning for children in all weather, every day.

2. Provide children with a diverse foundation of skills through encounters with nature and the outdoors.

  • Earth, Life, and Environmental Science lessons
  • Conservation and outdoor education
  • Sensory experiences
  • Group dynamics
  • Problem-solving, experimentation, and questioning
  • Creative arts
  • Motor skills
  • Social skills
  • Care of self and others; emotional literacy
  • Celebrate diversity of all living things

3. Facilitate Place-Based Learning (PBL) for children. PBL is immersing students in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences. PBL also emphasizes learning through participation in service projects for the community.

The Fresh Air Academy at Indian Creek Nature Center is a drop off immersive nature experience for children ages Preschool to 5th grade. Children will go on learning adventures with experienced ICNC educators. Educators will develop seasonally appropriate themes to guide the day, but the children will determine the specifics of their time at the nature center. Children will explore and learn both as a multi-age group and in smaller age-based groups. Perhaps in small groups children will learn about density by testing what floats in the wetland and what sinks? Or maybe the day is spent learning about the importance of shelter and all of the children work together to build their own shelter in the woods? Children will spend ample time outdoors exploring and learning at the Nature Centers’ 200 acre classroom.

Registration is required and no walk-ins will be accepted. Capacity is limited to 10 students per session. Children can be enrolled in a public school virtual or in-person program, or a homeschool program. All are welcome regardless of their formal education plans for the 2020-21 school year! Facilitators will include 2 members of the ICNC Education team and ICNC volunteer Teacher Naturalists as needed. Multiple facilitators allows for dividing into small groups throughout the day.

The Fresh Air Academy sessions are 6 weeks long. Choose between morning or afternoon sessions (Not both, please!) Children will come to ICNC 4 days a week for a half-day.
